Evaluation

Finally we have the finished product which I believe everyone of our group is really pleased with; I am now going to evaluate the finished product.
Everyone see’s addictions in different ways so we chose to put across other forms that are generally not associated with addictions these being love, OCD, anorexia and drug abuse. Drug abuse is the first substance we used within our film; we did this as it is uniformly accepted as a serious addiction. We chose anorexia as it is usually considered to be a disease rather than an addiction. Our film helps to portray that it is the addicted behaviour of the person that fuels the disease. Obsessive compulsive disorders are also a form of disease where the person becomes addicted to being in control. Love is our final and most controversial element to the film. When a person is in ‘love’ their hormone levels increase to when they are not, when this increase of endorphins leave the person then suffers from withdrawal symptoms. Indicating this is also an addiction. Throughout the film a number of different shots have been used, this has been done so that the audience are able to see either what is going on or in some cases to keep them in suspense or relate to the character.
Our film raises the awareness of all these addictions in a hope to help people come to terms with the fact that they are all equally tolling, it was because of this that we decided to make our films purpose to raise an awareness.
Our casting decisions took a while to decide as we needed to find characters that resemble the addictions that were going to be portrayed. By this point each of us had completed our dialogue and shot scripts so we knew exactly what we were looking for. For the drug section of the film we decided to use Charlotte as stereotypically drugs are associated with people of mixed culture. We found that after interviewing Charlotte that she had some experience with acting as she studied drama at school. For the anorexia section of the film we found it especially hard to find an actress as it could have been seen as insensitive, so because of this we had to look at what qualities we had within the group. So eventually I offered to take the part myself. For the love section of the film we had decided we wanted ideally to have a couple as we didn’t want any discomfort to be visible on screen or for either of our actors to feel uncomfortable, again we found this part hard to fill as a lot of people were shy to be on screen with another male/female. We discussed these issues as a group and Jessica took the part with her previous boyfriend Kyle. For the OCD section we wanted a character that looked mature and presented themselves well. We found that Chenice looked the part and also had background experience after previously studying drama.
The drug abuse scene was filmed in a kitchen. It was considered to do this in a bedroom but found that that made the sense of the piece too personal whereas we wanted to dehumanise the character from herself. Being in the kitchen is a neutral room. Charlotte’s character is with Lorna, who is the person that is persuading her to take the drugs. When they leave the kitchen Charlotte begins to hallucinate; this is mediated through the change of lighting. We also vocally enhanced moments within this scene to emphasise how the drugs can alter your interpretations. Further along the scene Lorna is on the top of the staircase with Charlotte at the bottom. We found this worked well in expressing how the use of drugs escalates the further you get with them. When Lorna is shown with a mask on, it exaggerates how much toll the drugs have had on Charlotte’s perceptions once the camera shows Lorna again, but with a normal face.
For the anorexia scene we wanted to make the audience feel unnerved by the character, to do this we didn’t want to have too much activity. Not only would this show how little energy the character had from her lack of food but also make the audience feel a sense of intimidation towards the disease. The scene was filmed in a bedroom to reflect how personal the subject is to the character. There are a selection of pictures behind my character which are all taken from the internet. This creates a busy background but they also take up the rest of the screen shot, it also implies that this could be the inside of the characters mind magnified behind her. There is nothing else in her life that holds a similar importance. We originally considered filming this with a completely blank background with my character dressed completely in black to show the lack of variety in her life and how she has nothing of importance. However we found that the busy background worked better for the desired effect.
With our perception of love, we didn’t want to go with a clichéd romance but instead portrayed the contentment shown with a long term relationship where the ‘little things’ are what become important. To do this we did the filming in neutral areas of the house; the kitchen, the dining room and the living room. These are impersonal to the characters yet they are rooms that represent their love. Jess and Kyle show how the couple’s activities are dull and boring, but it is the unimportant things that make their relationship so significant. The lighting for this section is a natural light as we wanted the audience to focus on the overall happenings within the frame however for the sections of the individuals talking to the camera we dulled the lighting with a dimmed light on the characters faces this was chosen so that the audience would only pay attention to what the character was saying as well as the facial expressions.
The OCD is filmed within the kitchen. There are so many things in a kitchen that can be organised that we found that this room held the most opportunities for us to develop the addiction. The lighting for this section is particularly brighter than the rest of the film, this was done to represent that the character is slightly more comfortable with her addiction that the other addictions that we have raised an awareness to.
When it came to filming we all had the task our sections of the film by ourselves with the exceptions of Lorna’s part where all of us where needed as extras. I found this task easier than I thought as a lot of preparation was made before hand I knew exactly what had to be done. When it came to filming we made a few changes with mine in particular as the effect that we were trying to create didn’t come across well from learning the original script so we made a few alterations to make it seem a lot more natural. The shots are all tight framing this choice was made from the beginning so the audience would feel connected to the character. As you see the other three sections of this section the camera gradually zooms in and eventually ends up showing just the characters eyes. When Jessica filmed her section of the film everything was kept as planned as we wanted the couple to look content yet not interested each other. When Amy filmed her part of the film, she was extremely organised which helped her a lot as she was not the character. Chenice played the part well and I find that watching her on screen her condition is very believable; the costume that the character is wearing is dull yet with the purple top adds a slight bit of colour to her. This worked particularly well as the couple are seen doing everyday dull things yet there are then shots of the couple speaking into the camera saying how much they love each other. This piece was filmed really well with steady shots, and well thought out framing. When it finally came to filming Lorna’s section I found that the filming went really well, she knew exactly what she wanted the outcome to be and definitely directed exceptionally well. This section of the film also had a tremendous amount of editing to it with many of the scenes being slowed down or colours distorted. The music that accompanies this section works really well with this piece in particular as the beat is slower in parts than others so it fades beautifully between each section of the film. However the lyrics to this piece are also slowed down and repeated often which as a group we found this fitting in perfectly to the film.
To put the film together we worked as a group to divide each of the four sections into a further four more sections, to do this we used the editing programme Magix Movie Edit Pro11. As we had used this programme recently to edit our individual sections and also last year we all found this quite easy to use. As we were deciding the order as to which the sections of the films would appear we decided that as drug abuse is stereotypically seen to be the most effective and addictive that this will be shown first. This worked particularly well as it meant that the music would grasp the audience’s attention immediately. Love, OCD, anorexia then follow as we decided that the love would be the most controversial, OCD is then most commonly known as an addiction, the choice for anorexia to go last took a lot of thought as it is a very calm piece and a lot of speech is included in these sections so we decided if it was to go before the second drug section that it would liven the film. However this routine does change at the end of the film as the background sounds of the anorexia video increases it equalises with the sound of the final drug abuse section. The titles of the film at the end fade with the ‘born slippy’ track as the credits are appearing on the right hand of the screen in white, to the left are short 10 second clips of each addiction although these are muted. The OCD clips runs 3 seconds after the credits have finished which we felt added slight humour to the end after the seriousness of the film.
After the film was complete we wanted to receive some audience feedback so we organised a viewing for a selection of peers, alongside this we included a questionnaire. To ensure that we got honest opinions we made sure that the questionnaires were anonymous. From the feedback we received we were able to see that the film was very successful, with many of our audience saying they would highly recommend the film to others. The kitchen scene of the drug abuse section got highly rated; one viewer said “I found the film very effective in raising awareness”. We were extremely pleased with our feedback.
Media technology influenced our project tremendously throughout all of our stages of the production this being through the stages of research, planning, construction of the film and evaluating. Media technology has been a big part of our progress this being as we used the internet to research, mobile phones to keep in contact with each other this way we were able to keep up to date with each others progress. We also used the video camera to film our film, and Magix Movie Edit Pro11 to edit our film. The main source of media technology that we used is www.blogger.com to record our progress throughout the whole production. Throughout the whole of our progress we have used new media all the way through, I don’t think that the project would have worked as well as it did.
Alongside a short film we also had to produce a film poster and a film review. As a group we took a number of photographs of the cast and then used the programme photoshop to airbrush the photo and blacken the background, this part I quite enjoyed as I really enjoy photography. We did some research on the internet to see the general layout of a film poster, from this we were then more knowledgeable as to what needed to be included. We came to an understanding that the poster would be seen before the film so we had to make it attention grabbing to the viewers eye, for this we used the main colours; red and black which symbalize danger. For the film review we also researched into many different ones so we therefore had an idea as to the general layout. I chose to create mine on Microsoft word, with three columns which contain the review. The title is Empire Film Review although on the poster I have done the title in capitals, below this is the title Addiction again this part is in capitals. I chose to keep the same colour scheme as the film poster to make it look more professional.
Overall i am extremely pleased with the final product as is the rest of the group, I feel that we all used the best of our abilities to create something that displayed our talents well. Throughout the process we were well organised which definitely was one of my weaknesses last year, however I feel that as we produced an opening two minutes of a film last year we were able to use our knowledge to create this product.

Addicted- Film Review

Addicted
July 2011
Cast; Charlotte Clarke, Adelle Mortimer, Kyle Sims, Claire Thompson, Chenice Clarke
Director; Lauren Turner
Running Time; Approximately 9 minutes
Distributor; www.youtube.com
Certificate; 15

The film consists of five main characters, Charlotte Clarke, Adelle Mortimer, Kyle Sims, Claire Thompson, Chenice Clarke living ordinary lives. As you learn more about these characters you discover that each suffers from an addiction that controls their lives. Drug abuse, Love, Anorexia, and OCD are phenomenally portrayed in this short, mind blowing film.
The film starts with a red title in the opening sequence; this has been used effectively in demonstrating how dangerous these addictions are. This is a very accurate use of the symbolism of the colour red.
The first scene focuses on drugs. The camera has been positioned beautifully; by cutting off the actresses head the director de humanised her identity which represents how a person changes through the use of drug abuse. The audience can relate to Charlotte's character through her reluctance to take the drugs and how she feels forced to do so through peer pressure.
Love is the second addiction that is shown in the film. This is not generally seen as an addiction; however the effect of love creates withdrawal symptoms when the love is no longer there. Adelle and Kyle represent an idea of love that doesn't coincide with the Hollywood Romanticism of love; they show themselves to be content in their day to day routine. When they are watching the television, their actions become monumental to the relationship. This film reflects that the characters are extremely content once the traditional out look is removed, this is demonstrated when the male does the hoovering.
The third part of the film is Anorexia. The character emphasises her happiness with herself when she only ate an apple. This is very effective in a sense of ironic development to the scene as apples are known as the key fruit symbolised with health through the children's rhyme of 'an apple a day keeps the doctor away'. This is contrasted with the role of anorexia, a well known disease that the audience will find easy to relate to. However, the directors choice of costume for one of the blogs makes the actress seem thinner than she does in earlier scenes. This interrupts the fluency of the chronological order of the piece.
The fourth part of the film is Obsessive compulsive disorder. This is portrayed by the actress as the condition is less commonly associated with OCD as generally people expect them to be 'clean freaks' but Chenice showed a different side of the addiction as a 'checker'. The repetitive actions shown throughout emphasize her illness; the scene appears brighter than the other three addictions raised however this could be as the character is represented to be happier with her addiction compared to the other characters.
Overall a fantastic mind opening film, a definite Turner success, with a complex story line that worked absolutely beautifully.

Research into Film Reviews

I used the Empire magazine to read up on a few other film reviews as our next task is to create our own film review, below is a review I looked at on Empires website. I like the simplicity of these yet I didn't feel like they gave enough information so for my own review I am going to include a bit more information.
Limitless
Plot
A struggling writer (Cooper) discovers a top-secret drug with brain enhancing qualities, which bestows him with superhuman abilities.
Review
Wannabe writer Eddie (Cooper) is heartbroken, broke and blocked, until a friend slips him an experimental smart drug, transforming him from scuzzy loser into Hello!-retouched genius. Yes, it’s a Faust for the pharmaceutical age – an uglified Anna Friel pops up as a burned-out former addict – and Eddie soon finds himself haunted by blackouts and hunted by bad guys. Burger (The Illusionist) and Cooper both have enormous fun with the daft material, and it’s good to see De Niro on form, as a billionaire on the trail of Eddie’s secret. With a touch of Scott Pilgrim’s enhanced visuals and tongue firmly in cheek, it’s smart, stylish and entertaining – like Fincher’s The Game on crack.
Verdict
A loopy joy from start to finish, Bradley Cooper proves that he's the real deal.

My Film Poster

After researching into film posters I was then able to create my own, I used Photo shop to edit the photo and make the photo fade into the blacked out background.

Poster Analysis 2

I am now going to look at the film poster for Titanic
This film poster again has the main characters as center image, even though the boat takes up the majority of the poster it makes you look in the direction that the boat is facing which is the couple. The man has his arm around the female and seems to have a strong hold on her yet her head is turned, the colours that are used are within the poster work really well together as the top half is warm yet the bottom half of the poster is cold colours. Just by looking at the poster you get an idea as to what the film is about, Love and possibly death, the guy fights for the girl but she is not interested. The title is big and as it is in white stands out really well against the darker blue, below the title has a similar layout to the Lord of the rings poster as it tells you the editor ect although this is in a colour that does not stand out as much as those of the title and the main actors names which are at the top of the poster. 'Nothing on earth could come between them' is the line above the title yet as I mentioned before if you follow the line of the boat up it seperates the couple which could also signify death. The poster also includes the director which means that the director has done some well known films before.

Poster Analysis

As part of our brief we were given the task to create a film poster to go with our film, in order to make sure our posters are effective and good quality I am going to look at a few posters so I have more of an idea as to what I need to create.

The poster I have chosen to look at is one of The Lord of the Ring posters, the film is based on the books by JRR Tolken. The poster is quite dark colours, yet focuses on the main characters faces, yet below the faces you see characters on horses with swords this signifies action straight away. The font of the title is similar to times new roman which again signifies time. There is text at the bottom which contains information on the editor and important information on the titles, also in the centre at the bottom it says December 19 yet it does not say where it is distributed.

Editing as a group

Today we all met together so we could watch each others finished sections and decide how the film was going to be put together. After watching each others, we loaded them all onto the timeline and cut each section of the film into four different sections. We decided to put the drug part first followed by the love part, anorexic part and then the OCD part this is then repeated four times. The only editing parts we needed to do after this was fade our sections together and the music which comes from the drug parts into each section. We then added our titles onto the beginning and the end of the film, we decided that the titles of our responsibilities and cast will be shown at the end of the film along with sections of the film on the right hand side. As the sections that would be shown with the titles were only small parts of the film we decided to let the OCD one run on a couple of seconds after everyone else's, this I think works really well.

For Lorna's part of the film we felt that putting a soundtrack behind it would work really well so we found a track called 'Born slippy', this fits in really well with this section of the film and works really effectively.

Overall as a group we are really pleased with our finished product!!

Title and Certification

Our film still does not have a title so before we start putting the film together we had a short meeting to discuss our title, as our film is about addictions it made sense to call our film 'Addicted'. All of the group agreed on this name straight away. Another issue we had to sort out was the certification of our film which again was decided quite quickly, we decided to have our film as a 15 as it has quite a complex narrative and the drug use may not be acceptable for those under that age.

Editing

The past few days we have all taken it in turns to edit our own sections of the film, we have been using the editing programme 'Magix Movie Edit Pro11' which after using it last year we all knew a bit about it. The editing programme was really easy to use and as we all had plenty of spare shots it meant we were able to try different effects knowing that nothing that was needed was altered. I found my piece especially very easy to edit as it needed to seem  natural and not as professional as the others, this being so it looked like it was done on a webcam. Between the four sections of my part I used the editing programme to zoom in slightly. So the last shot of my section is off the characters eyes. For the last section of my part I decided to run some water so it seemed like the house had some noise to it, we decided to make the noise alot louder as it will represent that time is running out.

FIlming- Lorna

Today Lorna filmed the last part of the film which again went really well. Now our film is all filmed on Wednesday we are going to start editing.

Filming- Amy

Today Amy filmed her section, again it went really well which was due to the good organisation skills.

Filming- Jessica

Today Jessica filmed her section which I hear went really well other than a few issues with the lighting.

Filming-Lauren

Today It was my turn to use the camera to film my part, as I was prepared with my shot script and dialogue script I was able to start filming straight away. The filming went really well although a few changes were made as we felt they worked better.
The changes were;

  • The dialogue script was altered slightly which made the film more effective
  • We decided to only do three blogs of speaking as we felt there was alot of speech which may bore our audience, also we didn't want the film to be too long. The fourth blog is now of the scales which were altered to make the wight lower, and then you see a close up of the characters face.

Lighting

Lighting can change the effect of a film straight away, so we have decided for two out of the four sections will be using direct lighting(OCD&Love) and the other two sections will be using diffused lighting (Anorexia&Drug).

Hair and Makeup

To create the anorexic look, I am not only going to have to concentrate on props and costume but also hair and makeup as they will have a vital impact on the overall image that im trying to create. As the blogs are meant to be time apart each blog is going to need a different look to it.

  • First blog- I am going to have my normal make up on which consists of, mascara, foundation, and black eye liner. This is so that the character will look normal. The hair will be down
  • Second blog- I am going to take the eye liner off so the eyes look smaller, but as the eye liner is being taken off we are going to smudge it slightly so the eyes will look darker. The hair will be up in a messy bun with fringe clipped back this way the most attention will be on the face although alot of flesh will be shown as the shoulders are on show.
  • Third blog- I am going to wipe off most of the foundation off, but also add some pale powder so the character will look ill, I will also add a bit more blackness round the eyes this will be done with eye shadow. The hair will be scraped back and look slightly wet, to make the character look like she has lost interest on appearance.
  • Fourth blog- I am going to leave the make up and hair the same as the third blog, as there isn't much more I can do to make myself look thinner without making the character look young which would mean taking off all make up which would then make the character look younger than planned.

Costume and Props

For my part of the film the costume choices are going to have to be plain and casual as I dont want the audience to pay more attention to the costume than the character. If I use bright colours with patterns on I think that the focus will be taken away, also from my research I have realised that most online blogs the people are generally in their pyjamas or dressing gown ect. Another reason to using very casual clothing will be as the location will be at home in the bedroom, I want the character to look relaxed.
Another issue will I as the character will have to look thinner and thinner throughout,

  • For the first video- A plain white fitted t-shirt, so the character looks almost normal
  • For the second video- A beige vest top, alot of flesh will be on show to make the character look thinner
  • For the third video- A black t-shirt but this time the t-shirt will not be fitted. This will be so the character will look thinner.
  • For the fourth video- A plain white vest top, again so alot of flesh is shown

Here is a few examples of the images that will be placed on the wall behind the character
A famous model who eventually died

Meeting- Distribution

Today we had another group meeting to discuss distribution, we have decided that as most short films are generally less that 15 minutes long we are unable to distribute our film at the cinema or onto DVD. Therefore our film will have to either have to be distributed online (Youtube) or at a film festival. We decided that for the time being our film will be distributed online our reason being that you tube is used by millions all over the world, this way our film  should get many views.

Meeting

Today we had a group meeting where everyone put across their plans for their sections of the film, it was really interesting to see what everyone had done and how they had put their own touch to the initial ideas. Together we  looked at all of our shot scripts and our scripts. I feel as we all get along the meeting went really well and now I feel more confident with our final product as we are all now aware as to what everyone is doing and we now know the rest of the groups view.

Shot Script

Below is a photo of my shot script, the drawings are just quick drawings but I feel now that this is done filming will be able to be done alot easier with no complications.
After preparing this I feel alot more confident about producing my part of the film.

Dialogue- Anorexia

Hey it’s me again here goes day 8 of my exercise program, I ache like mad but I can feel the improvement. Mum keeps moaning that I haven’t eaten enough, but she doesn’t seem to understand me. I want to be a thinspiration for you guys and the world as Kate moss says “Nothing tastes as good as skinny feels” it is so true!! Now that my size 6 jeans are baggy I love it but I still feel fat and ugly, just no one understands it.

Me again day 10 I ache like mad, look my eyes have dark circles around them, I feel so good but stick look so ugly and fat no ones going to want me. I have started to put pictures up around my room to keep me on track of how I want to be. Hang on I’ll get this really pretty one.
(Leaves camera for 2 seconds and comes back with picture)
Look this is how I want to be better keep going anyways I better get going got a lot of exercise to be getting on with.

Hey guys thought I would do a quick blog before I went to sleep as I am really tired, it’s only six o’clock but it gets me away from my parents, and I don’t need that right now. Um I went to school today and ended up waking up in hospital they say im not getting enough nutrients but they are lying I feel fine. I spoke to someone on the web and she is going through the same thing, I had just an apple today which is healthy and a my friend from a website had half a banana and she is looking so good at the moment it’s unreal, people like her give me the motivation to keep on going.

Target Audience

When making a film the audience is one of the most important things, we will need to fulfill our chosen audiences expectations. For example when you to to watch an action film you wouldn't expect or be impressed if the film consisted of singing and dancing. We had initially said that our target audience would be teenage females, but due to certification we have now defined our target audience to 15-24 year olds our reason being that as our film  will consist of four different narratives we want the audience to be able to understand the film.

Planning Filming Times

So that we are able to ensure that the film will be complete in time for our deadline we have made sure that everyone will have enough time to film their parts of the film, and that our cast will also be available for these times. The plan will be as follows;

  • 16th-18th February I will have the camera
  • 18th- 20th February Jessica will have the camera
  • 20th-26th February Amy will have the camera (The long gap is as we all needed to ensure we would be available to film Lorna's part
  • 26th-28th February Lorna will have the camera
As long as we stick to this schedule we will be able to keep on task, for mine, Jessica's and Amy's parts of the film we will be filming them by our selves. I think that this will be a challenge but at the same time will work more efficiently.

Research into videos

I have done some more research into anorexic blogs, but this time I have looked into videos on you tube as this is what I will be creating. At first I found it quite hard to find any actual blogs as many on you tube are of those who have re-covered. Most blogs I have found to be really long and almost all of them are located in the bedrooms with the camera directly on their faces. Below is an example of a girl who is really happy she has lost a few pounds.

Some videos I found are just of photos and words, telling their story, and many are tributes to those that lost their lives to it. I found one video of a 14 year old who lost her life to anorexia, the video was made by her sister who quotes her diary 'I want to be beautiful'. I also discovered that most of those that suffer from anorexia, not eating becomes not enough, they want to go deeper and start cutting them selves. I personally do not want my blogs to be in that much depth, I am just going to show the beginning of the stages as it will be very hard to make myself look so skinny.

Location

Whilst planning our film we have had to make many decisions in order to have a good quality finished product, we have come to an understanding of the importance of the location and the effect it can have to the film. For example in a love film you wouldn't expect the location to be a morbid place, so as well as our expectations we need to take into account our audiences expectations.
For my part of the film we have decided that a bedroom would be the best place for the location as a bedroom is generally a place where someone feels comfortable and is almost a personal place. This would work well as our target audience is teenage females, and we want them to connect with the character and have an understanding to how she is feeling.
For Lorna's part of the film we decided that her kitchen would be an ideal place for the film to be shot as it is quite open planned and modern. We wanted this scene in particular to seem  natural and not fixed at all as it is meant to be a house party.
For Amy's part of the film we again decided that the kitchen would be ideal as it will be easier to give the effect of a young person suffering from OCD, as the ultimate idea is for the female to be a 'checker' meaning she will check everything is off.
For Jessica's part of the film we felt it would work better if we used a number of rooms in the house, this way it will represent every day life. We have decided that we will use her kitchen, dining room and living room.

Production meeting; Casting

Today we had a meeting for the casting of our film.
We need ;

  • A male/female to play the OCD part, pref ably someone who possibly has a borderline OCD this way the sources would be first hand.
  • A male and a female to play the Love section, pref ably a couple so there would be some connection for the audience.
  • A male/female to play the part of an anorexic girl, pref ably someone slim and quite confident.
  • A male/female to play the part of a druggie, pref ably someone who is outgoing and very confident.

We had to be realistic about who would act for us, we have realized after watching a number of short films how important the characters are and that for the narratives we were using we are going to need to get some good actors. After what ended up being quite a long meeting we came to an agreement that for;

  • The OCD part of the film; Amy would be the voice over and a friend of the group would be the actor.

  • The Love section; Jessica would be the girl and a friend of the group would play the male part.

  • The Anorexia blogs; I would do myself.

  • The drug section; A friend of the group would play the main girl, Extras would just be a group of friends.

Research

Before planning my section of the film I have realized I am going to have to do a fair amount of research into my topic as there is a lot behind just being skinny. I am going to view online video diaries to get an idea as to what I can produce as we all have agreed that a video diary would be the most effective way to show quickly what is happening.
As an encouragement to further lose weight, members often exchange thinspiration image or video montages of slim women, often celebrities, who may be anything from naturally slim to emaciated with visibly-protruding bones. Conversely, reverse thinspiration may be photographs of fatty food, overweight or obese people intended to induce disgust and motivate further weight loss. Pro-ana blogs often post thinspirational entries, and many pro-ana forums have threads dedicated to sharing thinspiration. Thinspiration can also take the form of inspirational mantras, quotes or selections of lyrics from poetry or popular music.*

I love ana. But at times i find myself wondering where my life is heading. I have always excelled in school and i know i could do great but everytime I give up ana i feel empty inside. i feel devoured by total darkness and emptiness. It want to be so thin that I disappear. i want to see my bones poke through my skin and see no fat. I don't know why i became ana or why ana chose me but she did and I am ana so i must live with it. It is hard and frustrating at times and I hate lying to my family and friends. My life is confusing, even I don't understand myself. Do i really hate myself that much? Is that why i cut myself all the time and starve. The answers to these questions I just don't know. Why did god choose this life for me to live. i just want to give up and die. i want my life to be over, maybe that's why I starve myself. Maybe it's nothing more than a death wish.

Weight: 110
Caloric Intake: 211
Hey,
I didn't really do anything today.  I guess I was kinda lazy.  I am so frustrated right now.  Every morning I wake up and weigh myself and my scale seems to be stuck on 110.  I don't know what to do, but I can't stand all this fat on me.  I want to reach my short-term goal of 105 pounds real soon.  Being fat sux the big one!!!!!

Whilst researching into this girls posts I found them quite distressing and touching, I feel now I have a better understanding into how I need to put across my dialogue.

From my research I have come to a realisation that celebrities have a big impact on the way girls see life as they are role models. I could incorporate this within my 7 15 second video diaries by having images of celebrities behind the actor whilst they are speaking.
“Nothing tastes as good as skinny feels” Kate Moss
“A psychologist who specializes in treating eating disorders told the Sydney Morning Herald that "The term is used in anorexia websites to reinforce to themselves and each other to pursue thinness."”
“Model Katie Green told the tabs that "If you read any of the pro-anorexia websites they go crazy for quotes like these."

Practicing with the cameras

Today we got to practice with the camera so we could get a rough idea of what we would need for our short film, we filmed the drug scene. As it was not the proper thing we just concentrated on the camera shots and angles that each shot will be filmed at to give the maximum effect. I found this exercise really helpful as it gave us a rough idea of what was and was not possible to do, I also found that we worked really well as a group and we were all prepared.

Change of idea

We have had a group discussion on our idea and we feel that our original idea (see blog below) will not have enough action in it and within the group this idea was not agreed on. From this we have all put in our views to come up with a new idea which will put across the reactions of drug abuse, and how people react to certain things for example my part is the dieting section where I am going to research into pro anorexia sites and view video blogs and chat rooms to get an idea as to what goes on in their minds as I myself have never had a eating disorder neither has any one that I know. Our short film is going to raise the awareness of drugs linking in with the obsessions of love, OCD and image (eating disorder). We are going to show the obsession of someone taking drugs and show the effects this can cause, this idea is going to be flashing through the other three short clips that will all be split into the film but somehow interlink with each other. We have also decided which roles everyone is going to be doing I am director, Amy is editor as she is good on computers and the editing is going to need to be quick and done by someone who knows what they are doing. Lorna is going to be doing the storyboard as she is very creative and good at drawing and taking photos and Jess is going to be scriptwriter as she is good at writing and has a good imagination. We have decided to split our film into four sections this way it means that one person is able to be in charge of what happens within that section, although we are going to present our ideas to the group before the idea is final.

Finalised Idea

We were originally looking into making a film about anorexia, but once going into more depth on the topic it seems that in terms of getting characters and having some sort of realism to the film it wouldn’t work. So we have looked into Body dysmorphia and this seems more realistic as the symptoms are more to do with general appearance. 'Although some adolescents already worry about these things, and it is often referred to as vain. Any area of the body may be involved in BDD* but the face is the most common. BDD* is believed to affect at least one per cent of the UK population. It's more common in people with a history of depression and/or social phobia. It often occurs with obsessive-compulsive disorder or generalised anxiety disorder. It may also exist alongside an eating disorder. It usually starts in adolescence when people are most sensitive about their appearance
Below are some of the symptoms;
  • Wear excessive make-up or heavy clothing to hide their perceived defect
  • Repeatedly look in the mirror and seek reassurance about their appearance
  • Frequently touch or measure the perceived defect
  • Repeatedly pick at their skin or pluck their hair and eyebrows
  • Feel anxious when around other people
  • Seek medical treatment for the perceived defect
  • Diet and exercise excessively
A person’s behaviour is also affected by the disorder such as;
    • Not being able to hold down a job.
    • Sometimes avoid socialising
    • They can also find it difficult to have relationships
Treatment may include antidepressant medication, cognitive behavioural therapy or a combination of both. Antipsychotic medication is sometimes used.
It's difficult to prevent BDD* from developing since its cause remains unclear.'

All information above has come from;
I personally prefer the Body dysmorphia disorder idea instead of raising the awareness of anorexia as it will be easier to put across visually and could possibly be more interesting as my group consists of three other girls. By doing this disorder we are also then able to combine two ideas together as we have the option of being able to combine either depression and/or social phobia, obsessive-compulsive disorder, anxiety disorder, or an eating disorder. As all of these are seen to be linked in somehow.

Signs

Noise of the alarm clock, almost annoys you
Piano/Keyboard- doesn't seem to give much away
Blandness of colors, man looks like he has something on his mind. Something bad has possibly happened?
The music changes as he gets ready,- to a flat tone, sad
Girl catches his eye- head goes straight down, insecure? shy?
Typical office job,
Seems very keen in females
Everyone laughs in the meeting but he doesn't quite get it, colors again are dull
The answer phone is his mother, film seems very stereotypical -Lazy (alarm) Office job

Life is same day in, day out. Girl changes everything- falls in love at first sight, obsessed, this is the girl, everything paces up, music, camera movement.
He drinks the same drink as her

This short film uses many different codes and conventions

Chicken a la carte

The music- beats, like drums also heart

Camera- is wobbly but gives you the sense of being there

Stereo type, two girls, leave alot on the plate ect, get a text and leave (something better to do)

Music changes when the chicken is being carried in the bin, to a lighter beat almost like chimes
As the man smiles the music changes slightly, almost saddens the tone of the film as the man picks which pieces to put in his bag- you almost feel sorry for him as he gets excited over the smallest part of chicken

The camera work as all the children scramble through the bin for dinner, you see their happiness
one child is hanging out of the bin
The camera stays on one particular girl as you watch her eat,

The chicken bones are placed in front of the camera, so you see the little that is there yet the excitement of their faces
The end statistic is shown on the screen for a while, almost time for you to think then the shot of the children is shown again. This I found worked really well.

This short film is raising the awareness of poverty, the fact that the fast food worker can only afford to take scraps home for his family. The producer has risen the awareness of poverty, and the fact that there are others that have it alot worse of than us, having to live off others rubbish to survive. This film is a documentary, and I believe that it is of true happenings as the smiles on the children's faces could not have been faked. This short film overall is really powerful and puts the point across really well. I liked this alot!

LoveField

The film 'Lovefield' is said to 'combine elements of HORROR, SUSPENSE and DRAMA to create a story that takes the audience on a roller coaster ride of emotions.'* From the beginning you get the impression, that something bad is going to happen from the colors used, the music as well as the font of the film title which fades into a grey. The camera takes you through a corn field and through the use of various fades I got the sense that as the viewer i was waiting to find something, I straight away had the awareness something bad was going to happen. The phone noise which rapidly gets louder as you get closer to the finding, as the camera pans you see the phone, an open bag with money on the floor and an item covered in blood this instantly gives the audience a bad impression. Straight away I thought that the girl had been raped, but in fact it was almost the complete opposite. Through the use of the camera work, and clever use of sound the storyline to what you thought was happening turns around. I especially found the shot of the foot extremely clever, the fact that the foot gave the impression that the female was in pain.

Certification

Certification refers to the confirmation of certain characteristics of an object, person, or organization. This confirmation is often, but not always, provided by some form of external review, education, or assessment.*

Within all forms of media certification is needed so that all films are put into categories by the British Board of Film Classification (BBFC) This means that any person under that of the certification is unable to see the film at the cinema, or buy the film in a shop.

U; This means universal, the film is suitable for any age.

PG; This means Parental Guidance, this means that some scenes may be unsuitable for children to watch alone. So parental guidance is advised.

12A; This means that anyone under the age of 12 is able to watch the film but only with a parent.

12; This means that only those over the age of 12 are aloud to watch the film.

15; This means that only those over the age of 15 are aloud to watch the film.
18; This means that only those over the age of 18 are aloud to watch the film.

The ‘R18’ category is a special and legally restricted classification primarily for explicit works of consenting sex or strong fetish material involving adults. Films may only be shown to adults in specially licensed cinemas, and video works may be supplied to adults only in licensed sex shops. ‘R18’ videos may not be supplied by mail order.**

The main areas of concern for BBFC are;

  • Violence; As long as the violence is resolved quickly the certification will remain low, For example in 'Bambi' the mother is killed but it is shown in an understanding way that children will easily understand.
  • Nudity; If the nudity is seen to be natural this will not effect the certification at all although if it is not the certification will go up.
  • Sex; If the sex is real the certification straight away goes to 18R.
  • Language; Depending on the context that the language is used and how frequently it is used will effect the certification.
  • Drugs; Depending whether the drugs are just being talked about, shown, shown using them and the effects will change the certification straight away.
  • Discrimination; Discrimination is not to be implied as good although it does happen, depending how this is shown will again effect the rating.
All areas that i have mentioned above are taken into consideration when giving a film certification, this is why sometimes the age is not shown on a film poster as it is still being confirmed and the slightest thing can change whether the certification is higher or lower. When planning and making our film we are going to have to be extremely careful as to the way we arise issues and that the language is monitored.
